Boy threw dog into the river

A 16-years-old Denaby boy who threw a dog into the Don in a sack weighted with bricks was before the Magistrates at West Riding Juvenile Court at Doncaster yesterday (Thursday), when he pleaded guilty to two summonses for causing unnecessary suffering to a dog, one summons relating to the incident in the river and the second to the general condition of the dog.

Chief Det. Insp. W. Cockcroft said a man working on a railway bridge over the river saw a dog struggling in the water. It was a greyhound in a sack weighted with bricks, and its collar and lead were tied to the sack. With the help of another man he got the dog out. It was in a pitiable state, obviously starving, and also suffering from a wound in the right hind leg.

Insp. Young of the R.S.P.C.A. took care of the dog, which was greatly under-nourished, but it had to be destroyed.

The boy had been before the court several times for larceny and other offences and had served two periods of probation.

He was remanded in custody to the Quarter Session with a view to Borstal treatment. For having no licence for the dog he was fined ten shillings. He was also banned for five years from keeping a dog.
