Fire at the Denaby Main colliery

On Wednesday, and up to yesterday considerable excitement existed in the South Yorkshire colliery district as it had been stated that the coal at the Denaby main colliery, near Mexborough, had been found to be on fire.

On enquiry it appeared that on Wednesday morning the coal or slack in a goaf in the dip workings was found to be on fire. Workmen were once sent to the place, and after some time succeeded in getting to the fire, and overcoming it.

The pit however, had to be set down for two days, but work was resumed yesterday (Friday) by a number of the men.
