Goals are Imperative!

Yorkshire Amateurs 1, Denaby United 0.

Like the man who died from lack of breath, Denaby United faded from their first Yorkshire League Second Division match at Leeds on Saturday through lack of goals – the breath of life to any football team.

Although that might seen an obvious thing to say, it makes the point that Denaby failed on Saturday not from lack of effort, but from the absence of scoring power.

United’s defence never panicked and held out well, particularly against the second half pressure of Yorkshire Amateurs. The Denaby forwards, ever prompted by the veteran Charlie Williams at inside left, were thoughtful and resourceful, especially in the first half, when they mesmerised the Amateurs and continually split the home defence. But when it came to shooting…!

Amateurs may have been slow in their attacks, but they were quick to spot a shooting chance, and three minutes from half-time a free kick from inside-left Harrison found the head of left winger HEZELGRAVE, and Denaby were a goal down.

Three Missed Chances.

By that time Denaby should have been three goals up. Centre forward Kelly had run himself into the ground for scoring chances, but had rarely produced a shot. Outside left Toyne was fast and accurate with his centres, but there was no one to convert. Williams was always on the move, a trying to set up goals that never came.
The best first half chance was outside right Roebuck’s in the 14th minute. Beeton completely misjudged a Toyne centre, and Roebuck time his header perfectly, but somehow the Amateur’s keeper twisted in mid-air and prodded the shot over the bar.

Encouraged by their goal, the home side did all they could in the second half to cash in on their advantage. Denaby never gave up, and in the dying minutes Williams all but equalised, hitting an inspired shot which incredibly bounced out of the underside of the bar. Smith got his head to the rebound, but the shot sailed over.

On form like this, Denaby must do well if they can find their shooting boots.
