Aged Denaby Priest´s Mishap

Injured in Street Accident

The Rev. T. B. Kavanagh, of Denaby Main, for 25 years priest-in-charge of the Roman Catholic Church at Denaby Main, and now retired was knocked down by a motor van yesterday afternoon, in Doncaster road, Denaby, shortly after two o´clock, and rather seriously injured.

Father Kavanagh, who is 76 years of age, had paid a short visit to the Labour Club at Denaby Main, and when about to return home for lunch met one of his old friends, a Mr. Connelly. The two men chatted for a time, Father Kavanagh being in his usual jocular vein and high spirits.

He was moving away across the road when a motor van drove up from the direction of Doncaster, Mr. Connelly shouted but Father Kavanagh is very deaf and was unaware of his danger. The driver did his utmost to avert an accident. The van swerved sharply to the right, turning almost completely round, and Father Kavanagh was knocked down, his head striking the ground with some force.

Mr. Connelly went to his assistance, and found that he had received a nasty cut on the forehead, over the right eye, bruises on the arm, and other injuries. When being helped to his home in Tickhill street, Father Kavanagh complained of a pain in his side.

Dr. Ford was quickly summoned, and found Father Kavanagh was suffering from severe shock. The external injuries were attended to, and there are good hopes of a recovery, for Father Kavanagh possess remarkably fine physique, notwithstanding his advanced years..

Father Kavanagh retired from active charge at St. Alban´s four years ago, after nearly thirty years ministry there. He was born in England, of Irish parentage, and has travelled extensively. As a young priest, he laboured in Australia, but his most valuable and fruitful experience has been with the miners of Denaby Main.
