Another Soccer Memory
from Letchworth, Hertfordshire, has come a letter from Mr N Schofield, who encloses the names of players for an old print of the 1990 Mexborough and District schools team which we printed recently.
The names he gives are: goalkeeper Harvey (National); Kelly (Denaby), Schofield (Adwick Road), Savage (Swinton), Walker (Denaby), Lanceley (Swinton), Llewellyn (Dolcliffe Road), Richardson (Doncaster Road), Norton (Dolcliffe Road), Bennett (Dolcliffe Road), Hirst (Dolcliffe Road), Brookes (Dolcliffe Road), Devine (Swinton).
Mr Schofield says he has had the “Times” sent to him for the past 20 years and he and his wife look forward to the arrival of the paper every weekend. He adds that his eldest boy played football for the Herts county grammar schools, for the Herts Youth county team and was selected to go to the Lilleshall residential College under Messrs Winterbottom and Slater.
We are indebted to Mr Eric Walker of Dolcliffe Rd, Mexborough for the above photograph of Denaby Rossington Street school when they won the Montagu shield in season 1919 20.
Mr Walker was in the team and was also in the other old photographs referred to.
Mr Walker now a motorman with British Railways, joined Denaby United when he was 16 and played in several Midland league games. An outside right he also played with Roman Terrace and was in their side which won the Mexborough Challenge Cup.
The Rossington Street school team, pictured above was: E walker (captain), J Langford, R Jones, H Whitehouse, T Thacker, A Gregory, Palmer, J Myers, F Senior, J Smith, S Sellars, Longbottom.
Also in the picture are Mr W Watson, then headmaster and Mrs Corbett and J Gregg
