Denaby´s Surprise.

A Flash of the Real Thing at Sutton.

Sutton Town 1, Denaby United 3

After their recent failures, and especially that dreadful display against Notts. County, at Denaby, last Saturday, Denaby were not expected to have a successful trip to Sutton on Tuesday. But they sprang a surprise, and showed a flash of their real abilities in the gloom of disheartenment caused by the last few weeks´ happenings.

The game was peculiar in some respects. It was fairly even until the last twenty minutes , although Sutton did a little more of the attacking. Then ILLINGWORTH let drive from long range, and the Sutton goalkeeper let the ball slip out of his arms and over his shoulder into the net. Then Denaby rose in their might, and Sutton were under terrific pressure for some minutes. PICKNETT got through again, and within a minute put on a third, It was quick work, and left Sutton gasping. But they rallied in their turn, and HAMILTON got a goal for them. But the home side could get no more, and Denaby retired worthy and unexpected winners.

With Taylor injured, Denaby had to call on Whitehead, and thus had two young backs. Bisbey played very well, and the defence generally was very good. Bromage put in some fine work. Illingworth and Rhodes were also outstanding figures.

The return match with Sutton Town will be played at Denaby on Monday next, kicking off at four o´clock.

Denaby United have re-signed Bromage, Illingworth and Rhodes up to date.

Worksop Town have been allowed to withdraw their second team from the Sheffield Association League.
