Award takes him to Paris.

Mr Neil Smith, of 110 Park Road, Conisbrough, has won a French Government scholarship and will be studying pianoforte in Paris under Jacques Fevrier of the Paris Conservatoire.

Neil, who is 22, began studying music at the age of eight. He is a former student of Mexborough Grammar School, where he will be particularly well remembered for his participation in school concerts.

He studied the pianoforte in Sheffield and is now reading music at Birmingham University, and continuing his pianoforte study.

While he has been at university he had developed an interest in Opera and asked produced and designed several of the Guild Theatre Group operatic productions.

Neil has also done a considerable amount of coral conduct it in and around the University. In 1957 he won first prize in a concerto competition.

He was soloist for the Schumann concerto at a concert given by the Midland Youth Orchestra in the Town Hall, Birmingham in February.

Jacques Fevrier was a pupil of Ravel and is considered an expert on Ravel’s piano music
