Carols And Gifts For The Listeners

When carol singers visited old people’s flatlets in Conisbrough on Sunday the old folk reached for their purses, after this Christmas is the season for giving. But when they opened their doors they found that theirs was not to give – but to receive.

‘Turning the tables’ were members of Conisbrough Parish Church Youth Club, who presented residents of the Marchgate old people’s flatlets with Christmas parcels of tea and biscuits.

The carolling party spent about an hour touring the blocks, singing at each of the 30 or so flatlets, handing out the gaily-wrapped parcels as they went along.

Captain Ormerod Simpson, of the Church Army in Conisbrough, told the ‘South Yorkshire Times’ on Monday, ‘Something like this is really worthwhile, especially nowadays when people often look down on youngsters.’ After their chilly task they gathered at Captain’s Simpson’s home for ‘hot dogs’ and a sing-song.
