Conisborough Teacher in Trouble
Maintenance Arrears

Alexander Reid, schoolmaster, Conisborough and formerly of Asby, Westmorland, was concerned in two cases at Appleby (Westmorland) Police Court on Saturday.

In the first he charged his wife, Gertrude Reid, a schoolteacher, Asby, with stealing two bicycles and 21 medals. Reid conduct his own case, and Mrs Reid was defended by Mr T Holden, Blackburn.

In April last Mrs Reid obtained a separation order.

This case having been dismissed, Reid was charged by his wife with disobeying the maintenance order made in April this year, the arrears been £24 18s and she also applied that in future the payments be made through the justice clerk.

Mr Holden said the reason for the application about future payments was that when defendant sent the payments to his wife they were always accompanied by most offensive letters.

The magistrates made an order for the payment of the arrears forthwith, with three months imprisonment in default, and ordered that future payments be made to the Clerk.

Defendant said he would not pay, and was led away by a police sergeant.
