Conisbro’ Enter the Season with a Fanfare

Conisbrough entered the cricket lists with a warming fanfare in the Doncaster League last Saturday. In Division One they scored 147 and dismissed Adwick-on-Dearne for 120 in an exciting finish, and in Division Two they sent Kilnhurst in their way for 44 and scored 50 for 4 to complete a ‘double’ success.

There was some fairly consistent batting in the first Division match, principal contributors to Conisbrough’s 147 being W. Hepworth 11, K. King 11, O. Pitman 10, A. J. Chadwick 29, W. Ridgeway 35, H. Humphries not out 11 and G. Stones 13, J. Longman took 5 for 35 and N. Hammond 2 for 16.

After losing their first wicket for five and their second at 26 Adwick were put into what seemed a very strong position by Bullock (27), and Beldon (34), for at the fall of the third wicket they had 82 on the board. Both were bowled by Arnold Chadwick, and his excellent bowling went on to cause a startling Adwick collapse which saw the board pass through stages of 4 for 105, 5 for 105, 6 for 107 and 7,8,9 and 10 for 120.

Chadwick bowled nine overs and took 7 for 31. Stones took 2 for 26. Weaver (with 15), was the only other double figure for Adwick.

Scott, Swift, Skinner, Ogley and Brandreth shared the Kilnhurst wickets in the Second Division match, and only Wilkinson reached double figures with 12. Wren (17) and Thompson (not out 14) helped Conisbrough to overhaul the Kilnhurst total at 50 for 4. Dobbs, Gillespie and Dungworth each took a wicket.
