Conisbro’ Cadet Proposed Via Transatlantic Phone

The Engagement, announced this week, of Miss Yennifer Bennett and Mr. David Smethurst, both of Conisbrough, confirms formally an understanding which has existed between the young couple since last June. Mr. Smethurst, an officer cadet in the Merchant Navy, was then in New York and the proposal was made in a transatlantic telephone call.

Both are old pupils of Mexborough Grammar School and are members of families very well known in Conisbrough and district.

Miss Bennett is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Bennett, of 1 “Peveril,” Elm Green Lane, Conisbrough. She left Mexborough Grammar School in 1956 and is now apprenticed at a leading Doncaster hairdressing salon. She has won several medals for old-time dancing and last year competed in the Yorkshire Amateur Championship.

Mr. Smethurst, who is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Smethurst, of “The Dale,” Conisbrough, left Mexborough Grammar School in 1953 and entered the Trinity House Navigation School, Hull, for a short period of pre-sea going training. He has just completed a four years apprenticeship with the Prince Line Ltd., and recently returned from America in the “Queen Elizabeth” after two round-the-world voyages in the cargo-passenger liner “Cingalese Prince.”
