Election Candidates

East Ward

Mr JA Booth (independent, East ward)

Born and bred in the urban district, Mr Booth conducts a fish fryer’s business in Denaby and is a trade representative on the Conisbrough Food Control Committee.

Formerly for 15 years a miner at Cadeby Main Colliery.

Mr Booth has been residing in the East ward for two and half years and is a member of Denaby Parochial Church Council.

Mr J Wright (Labour, East)

Previously agent for successive Labour candidates in the East ward, whose Ward Labour Party he has served for 12 years, Mr Wright now becomes a candidate himself.

He worked for 14 years at Denaby and kb Main colliery is and after 10 years in the employ of Conisbrough Urban Council is now employed in the central stores at the GEC factory at Swinton as a former warehouseman.

A member and delegate of Conisbrough branch of the Transport and General Workers Union.

North Ward

Councillor G Cheshire (Labour North Ward),

Council vice chairman, has represented the Ward since 1941. Native of Denaby, he has been Labour Party member 26 years and for five years chairman of Mexborough Trades Council.

He is Labour group secretary for number 18 Divisional Education Executive and a member of Conisbrough Primary School managers and Mexborough and District Secondary Schools, Combined Body of Governors Chairman of Council Baths Committee.

He has been associated with the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied workers for 27 years as member and official. Manager of Denaby Main Industrial Cooperative Societies Old Road Branch.

Mr P McDonald (Independent Labour, North Ward)

born at Denaby, starting work at Denaby Colliery underground at age of 13.

Joined the army in 1915 at 18, served overseas. Discharged medically unfit in 1919 and later was in partnership in a family contracting business, but the family was divided amongst the family on their father’s death, and Mr McDonald returned to Denaby Colliery for 10 years.

Later he became an insurance agent and is an active member of Mexborough branch of the Liverpool Victoria workers union, which he has served as delegate.
