Answer from Denmark

For 10 years Leila Herdus (14), daughter of Mr and Mrs John Herdus 45, Chambers Avenue, Conisbrough, has been throwing bottles containing messages into the sea when visiting the seaside for holidays.

At least one of the bottles has reached another country and the finder has written to Leila. The bottle, thrown into the sea at Humberstone, near Cleethorpes over three months ago was picked up at Ringkobing in Denmark by a 14 years old Danish girl, Doris Poulson, of Bjerregard. She has written to Leila (by the normal post) who was “thrilled to bits” by her success.

Leila, a Conisbrough Northcliffe schoolgirl, wrote back this week and is now waiting a reply and hoping to set up a regular correspondence with the Danish girl.

Her mother, Mrs Doris Herdus, told reporters this week that she would invite the Danish girl to spend Christmas with them if they started a regular correspondence.

Leila has thrown bottles with messages into the sea at Scarborough, Bridlington, Filey and Southend since she was old enough to understand what the purpose was.
