Losing its Character

Conisbrough is losing a lot of its character with the demolition of several old building and the construction of many new one, the vicar, the Rev George Braithwaite, said this week.

“I hope this demolition will not go on indiscriminately, as there are many buildings in the town of great architectural merit,” he told the “South Yorks Times.

“Some fine Georgian houses, such as Castle Form and church Form, I’ve already suffered, although we managed to save the Vicarage and Church House, which are also Georgian, as they are now listed as worthy of preservation.”

Built in 1710

“The new houses are quite presentable, but I feel they will become shoddy looking in a much shorter time than the old buildings in the town,” he continued, “One building I would particularly like to see preserved is the one next to the Fox Inn in High Street, which was built in 1710. It would be a great pity if this were knocked down or altered.”
