Conisbrough School is Teaching Golf

Latest addition to the varied sports curriculum at Conisbrough Northcliffe high school is the game once regarded as “purely for old men and business executives” – golf.

Running classes for third, fourth and fifth year students at the school are arts and crafts master, Mr Jimmy Greene, a member at Rotherham Golf club, Thrybergh, and Wath golf club member Mr Don Steele, sports master at the school, assisted by several interested members of staff.

“The idea came after several teachers had visited a golf tournament, and we ran a “twist club” last term to raise money for equipment,” said Mr Green, “we had half of our money given from school funds, and received a great deal of help from the professionals at Thrybergh, Roger Jennings, when buying second hand clubs.”

Almost 50 boys and girls at the school have joined the golf classes as an alternative to soccer, rugby or netball during their games periods, and so far have learnt the elements of gripping and swinging the club.

“There is certainly a great deal of interest in the school, and some pupils have shown quite a bit of ability, although the great difficulty at the moment is a lack to practice they are getting between lessons,” added Mr Steele.

Several pupils have, however, gone to Sandal Park, Doncaster, for practice and some boys have caddied for Mr Green and Mr Steele while learning the finer points of golf etiquette. The televised matches also form a centre of interest at the school during the student spare time. “We are hoping to arrange some games at Sandal Park, and also a tournament on the games field later in the school year,” said Mr Steele. “We would be grateful if anyone could let us have some old clubs they do not want, as it could solve the problem of lack of practice.”
