Denaby and Cadeby’s Season “Very Gratifying”

Mr R Miller, chairman of Denaby and kb Minus Welfare, said at the annual dinner of Denaby and Cadeby Athletic Club on Friday that a new tennis and cricket pavilion costing about £5,000 should be erected by March. On behalf of the Welfare he said it was pleasing to see the various sections were doing well.

The president Mr H Foster said the achievements of the athletic club, which comprise cricket, tennis and bowls, during 1956 season, were on the whole, very gratifying.

Speaking of cricket, Mr Foster said the first team, playing in the Yorkshire Council, and a poor season for weather, with six matches rained off. They had finished about 10th in the table.

Progress Maintained

Mr Foster said last year he had said he thought they had some good young players, and he was happy to see the good progress maintained and the successes achieved.

He congratulated Arthur Ellis, who had a good season, which included an innings of 129 not out. He also noted that George Stones bowled very well, particularly in the final games, and was ably supported by Cyril Whitehouse. Mr Foster also congratulated Arthur Davies, the second team, for winning a Doncaster League batting prize.

Of the tennis section, playing in the Mexborough league the ladies won their section and the club also won the mixed section of the league. Mr Foster congratulated John Hurley and Jesse Seabrook, who won the mixed doubles and the, and Mrs Jesse Seabrook, who won the ladies singles handicap.

The bowling teams had had another interesting and enjoyable season, and had one more success than on the previous season. They had won the Wath and District League section A, the “Times cup”, and the Wath and district league knockout cup.

He congratulated Mr W Horrocks, who was second in the League averages – being beaten by a very small percentage. In the annual club tournament for the Walton Trophy, Mr Les Williams had been successful.

A Tip to Players

Mr Foster said the committee were continuing improvements to the ground and its amenities. They were also trying to improve the playing strength of the teams where ever possible, and following the second team successful season they may find more difficulty in the selection of teams.

“I would like to say this to play members; if you happen to be left out of the team any time, accept that as a challenge and say to yourself, I am going to get back into that team, and if by practice and determination you can make that your aim, I’m sure you will be successful.”
