Batting Strength
Denaby Take Full Measure
Easy For Firbeck

Firbeck’s victory over Denaby and Cadeby was outstanding in more ways than one. From the start the bowlers had the Denaby batsmen tied up – that is with the exception of Wainwright and Wright, who scored 101 between them out of a total of 145. Woodhead bowled unchanged to take eight wickets for 42 runs, hitting the stumps only once, and Hutchinson had two for 54. Gent gave a remarkable display behind the stumps. He caught two and stumped two and kept his part of the scorebook clean. Then followed a 115 partnership of Hutchinson and Rogers.

Denaby had only one on the board when Greenwood snipped one from Woodhead into the hands of the wicket-keeper. Wright and Wainwright took the score to 44 when Wainwright could not get hold of Woodheads delivery properly and gave Smith a catch. Wainwright had scored 32 out of the first 44.

For lost time.

Although Wright had batted steadily during his partnership with Wainwright, he made up for the lost time when he was joined by Batty, who, after scoring three, was caught by Starbuck at 70, 22 more runs were added when Neville gave Woodhead his fourth victim. Gent did a smart piece of work when he whipped off the balls before Barrett could regain his foothold. Thus Denaby had six wickets down for 120,

Having contributed more than half the total. Gent was also responsible for Criddle’s departure. After a fearless defensive display, which, on the whole, was an outstanding feature of Denaby’s innings, Wright made his departure after scoring 69, which included eight fours and two sixes. Denaby’s total was 145.

Possessing fine batting strength, Firbeck easily anticipated having an easy victory, and it came as no surprise to see them when by nine wickets. Sherwin, who opened the innings along with Humphreys stepped in front of a straight one from Wainwright at 33, then followed the fine 115 partnership by Hutchinson and Rogers, the former carrying his bat out for 71 and Rogers doing likewise for 68. Rogers showed how easy it was to collar the Denaby bowling for during his fine innings he sent the ball to the boundary no less than 13 times. Hutchinson had nine hits to the boundary. Wainwright took the only wicket for 39 runs.
