Wardle spoils Elsecar’s prospect

Denaby 200 for 8  Elsecar 86

Jack Wardle, the Denaby left-hander, had his best day of the season, on Saturday when Denaby beat Elsecar by 114 runs. Denaby had a moderate team, absentees included Porter, the left hand fast bowler, while Hawke stood down to allow Richards, a local youth, a left-arm bowler on the Notts ground staff, who was home on leave to come into the side of the last minute. Wardle began by going in first wicket down, and partnered by Senior put on 101 for the second wicket. Wardle was at the wicket for an hour for a faultless 70 including five fours and a 6. Senior ‘s70 included seven fours and a six. Holland made 17 and Richards 11.

Denaby’s batting was a decided improvement on that of recent weeks and the victory prevented Elsecar from reaching the semi-finals. Facing a declared score of 200 for eight, Elsecar met with early disasters and but for fine batting by Bamford, would have been in even worse plight. He scored 36 out of a total of 86 and Baxter scored 12.

Elsecar’s downfall was due to Wardle’s clever bowling he got eight wickets for 42 runs. Twice he was helped to wickets by wonderful left-handed catches by Eric Robinson, and once by a similar catch by Richard. Wardle sent down 15.5 overs, five of which were maidens. Newton got the other two wickets for nine runs.
