During his 23 years as opening bat at Denaby. Arthur Ellis must surely rank the match against Sheffield United on Saturday, as one of his finest performances.

After scoring an immaculate and chanceless 112 not out, he took four superb slip catches, and he was primarily responsible for Denaby’s first victory of the season.

Denaby batted first and amassed the score of 222 for 5, in their allotted 46 overs, in addition to Ellis, the scorers were R. Dodd 31. D. Swann 19, K. Hurst 18, D. Hough 14.

Sheffield United made a disastrous start and were 22 for 5 in no time at all. Scores of 30 by R. Green, 26 by P. Haworth and 28 by E. Burgin improved the position, but when Ellis caught J. Arnold and then Burgin off C. Parker, the match was over. Bowling for Denaby in the Sheffield United all out score of 109 was R. Lawley 5 for 29, C. Parker 3 for36. D. Hough 1 for 14 and R. Cory 1 for 2
