Child’s Body found in Ash Pit

At the Doncaster West Riding Police Court on Wednesday, Mary Ellen Winterburn, married, of 93 Clifton Street, new Conisbrough, was charged with concealment of birth.

The case was a sequel to the discovery of the body of a child in an ash pit behind a house at 85 Clifton Street, new Conisbrough.

Sgt Lewenden stated that when he have apprehended the prison on Tuesday, she replied to the charge “I know nothing about it.” Later she said “The child you have found, Sgt, is not mine.”

The Chairman (Mr Hodgson) asked if she had anything to say why she should not be remanded, and she said “only that I am not guilty.”

Prisoner, whose husband is a soldier, was remanded for a week.

On Tuesday evening Mr Frank Allen, District coroner, formally opened the inquest on the body, and adjourned it to Tuesday next.
