Denaby Complete First “Double”

Bradford City Res. 0, Denaby United 3.

When Denaby United manager Harry Lee took charge of the Tickell Square club at the beginning of the season he said promotion would be a harder prospect this season than last. The reason, he said, was that York City and Bradford City were entering their reserve teams.

Denaby have now cleared one of the “obstacles”. Bradford City Reserves, were convincingly beaten 3-0 at home on Saturday to give Denaby their first “double” of the season. They beat Bradford 1-0 at Tickill Square a fortnight previous.

Once again Denaby missed a bundle of chances – the first very early in the match. Denaby forced a corner and from the kick a Bradford player handled in the penalty area, but the spot kick from Wiggles sailed high over the bar.

Denaby were not deterred and pounded at the Bradford goal. The home team were lucky again when Cooper, there right back, cleared off the line with his keeper beaten.

It was Smith (M.) who put Denaby ahead, netting with a ground shot after heading straight at the Bradford keeper. Before the interval Gerry Smith had put the visitors two in front.

Denaby continued their attacking play in the second half and had the misfortune to missed chances but Gerry Smith put the issue beyond doubt.

Denaby still retain their 100%, record with 10 points from five games and their defensive record is the finest in the two divisions, for they have had only four goals scored against them. Teams:

Bradford City, Butler, Shepherd, Cooper, Newlove, Barlow, York; Marsh, Waudby, Farley, Ferrier, Jones.

Denaby: Smith (G.); Wiggles, Caunt; Collins, Cooper (B.), Ainscough; Cooper (A.), Launders, Barton, Smith (M.), Smith (Gerry).
