Wright’s Late Winner

Beating the league runners-up was a good stroke of work, but Denaby did not wholly cover themselves with glory against Bradford reserves and the winner was delayed until two minutes from time when Wright (picture)converted a Strachan centre.

The goal rounded off the three most exciting minutes of the game. Denaby had been awarded a freekick against Nicholls for carrying outside the area, a decision much disputed by Bradford, Killourhy backheeled to Wright, and the Denaby centre forward volleyed in a terrific shot which struck the left upright. Another 6 inches would have made it a certain goal. Two corners followed inside two minutes, then the matchwinner.

Denaby were far oftener on the offensive than Bradford, but Bradford were always quicker on the ball. Donaldson was the livelier winger. With Bradford’s speed Denaby might have collected a hatful of goals, for at times there was little solidarity in the Bradford defence. First half was the better half. Twice Denaby were playing with 10 men. Once when Strachan was off and again when Killourhy injured his foot, but they were constantly aggressive and they were unlucky to miss scoring when Williams punted a free kick to Carver, Carver flicked the ball and it passed to right and the centre forward shot had beaten Nicholls and was entering the net when Farrell raced across and kicked it clear. Donaldson also had bad luck when he had only Urien to beat, blazed in and saw the ball hit the angle of the crossbar.

Killourhy had a goal disallowed for offside and would have had the ball into the net again but a second earlier the referee had blown for an infringement by Wright and a full-back fisted out.
