United’s Listless Show in League Cup Defeat

Denaby United 1, Ossett Albion 2

Denaby United, ineffectual as the tattered flag hoisted above Tickhill Square, played second fiddle to 0ssett Albion in the Yorkshire League Cup and duly went down 2-1.

Ossett virtually identical to the one which lost pathetically to Denaby 4-0 little under nine week ago in the F.A. Cup, was one of violent contrast. Their forward line was a robust and workmanlike set of players that combined beautifully but their defence was meek.

Shaking off shadows

The defence were able to hang out because of Denaby’s lack of bite up front with only Whittaker. the star of the home side, providing any sort of menace. He would shake off his shadow with ease, sometimes two shadows but his team mates let him down badly.

Denaby had 60 per cent. of the game yet not once did they look like scoring — Launders’ goal in the 59th minute was a wild swing in a goalmouth melee! Fordyce and Wilby provided the mainspring of the underdogs’ efforts and one just had to take notice of them Every one penetrated the Denaby penalty area where Caulfield’s height and skill was a delight to watch. Anything less than a good performance from Colin Parker would have given the lean centre-forward a riotous time

The blues, instilled last week at Bridlington Trinity, still lingered with Denaby, who were content to wander aimlessly through the game without an attempt to raise the pace in an effort to trouble Ossett’s rearguard. in which Green was the only prominent player.

Early lead

Only two minutes had elapsed when Fordyce scored. taking his opportunity from a Wilby taken free-kick while Denaby were caught flat-footed. Wilby added Ossett’s second from 2 yards in the 28th minute
