Denaby’s Revenge

Denaby United 1 Yorkshire Amateurs 0

Who says you can’t play good football in mud? It was a triumph over the conditions at Tickhill Square on Saturday when Denaby United game ample revenge for their Yorkshire League defeat at Yorkshire Amateurs at the start of the season.

United played some first class’ football against a side forced on the defensive but capable of the quick counter-attacks that is so dangerous.

Denaby took the lead thanks to a Dalton penalty after 27 minutes after Hall was brought down. This was perhaps fortunate for in a superactive first half, Denaby could have piled on a more decisive lead.

Kingstone twice shot wide and Amateurs goalkeeper Beeton had to make first-class saves from Jolly twice, Ainscough, Smith and Williams.

In reply the visitors only once really tested Denaby’s Collingwood, but he coped nicely with the advancing Horan after Hennessy had hooked the ball over United’s defence.

Tempers Raised

As the game went on, Denaby found it increasingly difficult to maintain their grip and it was hardly surprising that after an hour in the Tickhill Square swamp, tempers flare and Denaby’s “Tiger” Hall had his name taken by referee Mr L Pearson, of Doncaster.

One last word in praise of Mr Pearson’s refereeing. In difficult conditions he maintained a firm and undisputed grip on the situation.
