Sheffield Senior Cup
Seven-Goal Tie

Denaby United 2, Sheffield Wednesday 5

Denaby were beaten, yesterday, but by no means outplayed in one of the fastest games I have seen at Tickhill Square this season. It was not a good game. A crop of handlings by Wednesday punctuated play and slowed down the tempo and drew from the crowd several laconic observations on ‘handball.’ Wednesday took an early lead through WARD after eight minutes. He put them further ahead 14 minutes later and MOSELEY reduced the lead after 33 minutes.

HURD equalised in the second half, but WARD scored twice again in the 70th and 73rd minutes and TOONE got Wednesday’s fifth 15 minutes from time’ Toone’s goal was an unfortunate affair, a greasy ball from a comparatively harmless shot from Howson slipping out of Taylor’s fingers to Toone’s feet as he raced up into the goalmouth.

The story of the match was a series of hectic spells in which both sides attacked and shot in hard. Wednesday’s forward line were a speedy lot and their defence first-time tacklers. Dodfrey (Denaby left back) had a good game and Burkinshaw and Cletherose got through a lot of hard work. Burton was as indefatigable as ever and Moseley and Strachan put in a lot of neat constructive work.

Denaby meet Notts Forest in the Midland League, to-morrow (kickoff 2.30). The team will be: Nellowes; Madin, Vickers; Burkinshaw, Godfrey, Cletherose; Burton, Strachan, Saxton, Moseley, Hurd.
