Southport’s Fright After Holding Big Lead.

Denaby United 2  Southport 3

Denaby United bade adieu to the English Cup for this season at Tickhill Square on Saturday, when Southport defeated them 3—2 in a fast and rousing game in which the Midland Leaguers were by no means disgraced.

The first half was undoubtedly Denaby’s, who aided by sun and wind, made the visitors battle all the way, but Southport crossed over with the lead, a goal obtained by Tait.

Denaby lost the game in the first fifteen minutes of the second half. A miskick by Hunter let Southport in for Marshall put on an easy goal in three minutes, and twelve minutes later Tait scored his side’s third while Denaby stood appealing for offside.

Afterwards Kelly took the ball from the centre and shot past Halsall, and the same player again on the mark four minutes from the end with close range shot.

The patchiness of the vanguard was the greatest fault of the home team, whose defence put brilliant show: Hunter’s miskick was his only mistake. Ogley did great things at centre-half, altogether the half-backs did well. Hetherington was weak in the home attack. Southport had an easy passage opposite him. For Southnort Martin was a tower of strength centre-half, and Law, Tait, and the ex-Sheffield Wednesday player. Beadles, were outstanding.

The attendance was 5,120 and the receipts £232.
