Two More Points

Grimsby Town reserves, who have not enjoyed a particularly happy start to the season, yielded two more points and three more goals to Denaby on Monday evening, but United showed only the briefest snatches of the form that has made them leading league scorers.

It was a patchy game and touch and go for long periods. At half time the score was one nil. Egan had scored in the 28th minute from an angle which could have afforded him only inches to spare, and it was never a comfortable lead. Indeed when Stokes headed in a corner kick after 55 minutes it looks odds-on Grimsby winning.

Then those occasional flashes broke through and first Egan scored (ago very similar to Saturday’s) after 65 minutes and later (78 minutes) Duggan made the lead much more comfortable from a perfect Lambert pass.

One does not forget the near misses – Clark’s crossbar rebound, Duggan’s deflected shot, Southall’s drive, headed out by Tucker, Egan’s cross ball which went inches wide in the second half, but Grimsby had similar chances which were perhaps not so spectacular but which better finishing would have converted. Indeed the better finishing, if only patchy was the key to this 3-1 success
