Blaze of Glory
Denaby Pull off a “Grandstand Finish”

Denaby United 3 Scunthorpe United 2

Denaby lept into 1947 in a blaze of brilliance. For 67 minutes on Mondays Midland League matches they were leading – after 57 minutes by two goals. Then Scunthorpe, playing like a machine, snapped on two goals inside six minutes. In the 88th minute Denaby burst away and Asquith crashed in a long shot from just below the halfway line which Foxton reached – and lost. The old Tickill Square roar went up and Denaby had won.

The first Denaby goal came in the 43rd minute, Hyde putting the finishing touch to a lovely piece of solo work by Lennon. What looked for all the world like a centre from the wing, sailed into the top of the net with Foxton well beaten.

Scunthorpe came back with vigour, but it was Denaby went further ahead, Foxton failing to hold a shot from Hyde and Wright, make his reappearance in the side after his injury against Frickley, pushing the ball into the net.

After that Scunthorpe were really in the hunt. They sparkled in the mud, and Harper made their first goal which Robertshaw scored – the ball hitting Urien(who held it in his hands) sitting down over the line.

Bowers equalised in the 28 minutes of the second half, and it was thrust and parry to the last whistle. Denaby snatching a grand victory which thoroughly delighted the gate of 1200.
