Utd. Never Lost Grip in Seventh Win out of Eight

Denaby United 4 Hampton Sports 0

Denaby United took a 5 minute lead over Hampton sports at Tickhill Square on Saturday and never left the final result of the Yorkshire League game in doubt.

In defence Denaby were calm and efficient. In attack they were ever probing the Hampton rearguard, which was finally split wide open in a devastating seven minute second-half spell in which United added three goals to their 1-0 half-time lead.

Their first goal had come after five minutes as outside right Alan Cooper pulled, the ball back to Mike Smith from a throw in. The little inside left was perfectly placed to beat Cowan.

10 minutes later Launders skimmed the bar with a shot which should have made it 2-0 and later hit the post with a first rate shock. But at the other end 25 minutes had gone before Hampton had their first real chance – and then Horner shot wide.

Fullbacks Wiggles and Caunt and centre half Cooper kept the tightest possible grip on the visiting attack. Only once was the Hampton attack allowed any leeway and then left half Roy Ainscough was on hand to clear Simpson’s shot off the line.

Beginning of the End

A Barton goal just three minutes after half-time was the beginning of the end of the visitors. Ainscough and Jerry Smith worked the ball out to Launders, whose cross was neatly headed home by the centre forward.

The irrepressible Launders was quick to bounce on goalkeeper Cowans clearance to make it 3-0 after 51 minutes then minutes after that centre forward Barton prodded the ball past Cowan.

In notching up wins from seven of eight league matches, United look to be going from strength to strength – and still don’t seem to have reached peak performance
