New Look Denaby United are Among the Goals Again

Denaby United. 4, Norton Woodseats 1,

Denaby United’s solid 4-1 victory over Norton Woodseats on Saturday, their first win of their first season in the Yorkshire League, Division Two was as smart as the Tickhill Squares sides new red and white strip.

Denaby at last found the scoring touch they have lacked in general for so long, and lacked in particular in the previous week defeat by Yorkshire Amateurs. In front of their home crowd on Saturday, United looked winners all the way, with Whant striding up from left half to give them a 13th minute lead, and Toyne putting over a chicken head high centre two minutes later, which Davies struck. The ball seemed over the line but Kelly was there to make sure of 2-0 lead.

A Chance
Norton fought hard to half-time and gave themselves a chance of pulling the game out of the fire seven minutes from half-time, when Islip and Hughes combining to pull one back.

That was, however the only time the efficient Hyde in the Denaby goal was to be beaten. After half-time the home side stormed straight into attack, inspired by the graft of inside left Williams and within five minutes had broken Norton with two more fine goals.

Shot Home
The first came as Kelly shot home a cross from Jolley at outside right, which keeper Davies had parried to the centre forward’s feet. Kelly popped up again within three minutes, this time to put a slide rule pass through to Williams. The inside forward could never be tied down and was unlucky to miss at least two of the goals, heading on to the woodwork of the Norton goal.

In defence and attack, Denaby never lacked ideas. Foster and Cox showed fine anticipation throughout the match and upfront outside right Jolley showed some of the power that gained him nearly 30 goals for Stocksbridge last season.
