This Sort of Stuff Will Bring Those Long Overdue Points

Denaby United 4 Scarborough 3

There are times Denaby United really so much stuff to keep the customers happy – and Saturdays 4-3 Midland league defeat of Scarborough was one of those days.

It was touch and go to the 88th minute. Holmes got the matchwinner (he got the first goal of the seven – and alas) but even then it might be nullified the dying seconds but for a brilliant save by goalkeeper Williamson which the “early departures” must certainly have missed.

This was a “happy return” to Tickhill Square for the Midland League Side. The first half was pretty much one-way traffic. It didn’t seem at all like that in the first few minutes of the game when Pickard was in early action and the Scarborough forward line looked as though they meant business. But Denaby’s defensive work was good enough to keep their own forward line in an almost constant state of attack for 7/8 of the half. The seaside has improved a great deal in the last 10 minutes before half-time they underlined their improvement with a lovely shot from Ware in the opening phase of the second half.

But United were soon back in their own role it was disaster from their point of view when the 63rd minute a faulty clearance planted the ball at Smailes feet. It was a dish served up with Yorkshire relish, for there was nothing to do but shoot. The gallant Williamson flung himself on the ball as it sped goalwards from close range, but when it seemed they had killed the threat, the ball seemed to worm its way underneath his body and the next thing we saw was a mortified goalkeeper scrambling back in a vain attempt to stop it trickling slowly over the line. But this brought the equaliser to Holmes 29th minute goal for Denaby.

The subsequent scoring timetable went like this:

68 minutes – Walker (Denaby), 72 minutes – Walker (Denaby)

score Denaby 3 Scarborough 1

79 minutes – Mitchell (Scarborough), 88 minutes – Redhead (Scarborough)

89 minutes – Holmes (Denaby)

The timetable sets the seal on the story of the game. It was a storming seminar. Homs was back in the picture again. He and Duggan were particularly attractive pair and Duggan certainly deserved a goal. Wroe played soundly; Gillott too – both in defence and attack. And that went also for Southall. That the forgoes fell to the left-wing pair emphasising comparative strength and effectiveness of this wing as opposed to the right.

United have only to keep this up and some of those overdue points will be well and truly – in the bag!
