Thrills at Denaby

Denaby United 4  Staveley Town 3

Denaby United and Staveley Town fought a close game on the Denaby ground before 1,000 spectators. Goals were plentiful, and Denaby earned a hard victory by 4—3, after the visitors had twice held the lead. The run of the play favoured Denaby, but much of the football of both sides lacked positional play, and movements were more notable for dash than skill.

Staveley showed the better combination, and both forward lines reaped a good afternoon’s work against defences which played better than the score would indicate.

Bytheway opened the scoring for Staveley, and Nock equalised, the teams crossing over on level terms. On the resumption there was some rapid goal-scoring, three coming in three minutes, with another nine minutes after. Nock scored for Denaby, Cropper equalised, and Waring again won Staveley the lead.

Subsequently Denaby took charge of the game, and after Johnson had equalised, Kelly put on the deciding goal. A feature of the game was the whole-hearted enthusiasm of the players. Despite their defeat Staveley put up a good fight.
