Wisbech Have Not Won at Denaby in 4 Seasons

 Denaby United 4  Wisbech 0

Wisbech has been a happy Midland League hunting ground for Denaby United. The Cambridgeshire Club has not won at Tickhill Square for 4 seasons and of the last seven league matches (Saturday’s included) Denaby have won five and scored 24 goals to 10 in the process.

There was little of the Hull City fire about United’s performance on Saturday and the first half was singularly dull. There was a good deal of individual effort – promptings by Hague, an opening up of the game by Morgan, runs by Holmes, much worrying by Duggan, hard work by the Wisbech wingmen – but it was all scrappy and Denaby crossed over with an interval lead scored through a penalty goal by Southall after 30 minutes.

Duggan and Morgan went down together and the referee judged that Duggan had been grounded unfairly. A minute later, Wisbech were awarded an indirect freekick for obstruction in the Denaby penalty area. Edwards it the ball directly into the net – and it didn’t count.

Confident Second Half

Denaby scoring burst came in a much more confident second half. Duggan, storming into the game with a brilliant flourish, should have had a goal much earlier than his 66 minute point, for he was well clear with only Scott to beat when he was unfairly tackled – just outside the area, and the freekick came to nought. The goal he scored in the 66 minute was a result of his customary persistence for it must be frustrating for the Wisbech goalkeeper to watch the ball slowly crossing the line as he tried frantically to scramble after it.

Morgan was unlucky with a beautiful header which hit Scott – rather than being saved by Scott, and a third Denaby goal came from Holmes after 73 minutes.

Poulson got the fourth nine minutes from the end.

Wisbech at some near misses (remember that header by Grant just before the interval? The ball looked all the way a winner then bounced the crossbar – and over)

Edwards and Marden too, deserved better reward. But the strength of Denaby’s defensive play was always the decisive factor: Williamson added comparatively easy afternoon. A very useful couple of points, but not a game that will go down in the records.

Lincoln City Reserves are at Tickhill Square tomorrow.
