Nine Goals at Tickhill Square

Denaby United 5 Frickley Colliery 4

This must have been one of the grandest Christmas Day matches we have had at Denaby for many years.

Nine goals and arousing, skilful game were adequately compensation for the increased “gate” (which came into operation for the first time this season on Tuesday) and Strachan’s decider five minutes from time sent Tickhill Square supporters away thoroughly delighted. It was a dingdong battle from the kick-off.

Strachan gave Denaby the lead after 11 minutes and Vickers got a second six minutes later. Frickley were always dangerous and Price reduced the lead after half an hour. Hindley made it 3-1 before half-time.

After the interval it seen almost a goalscoring race between Burk and Vickers. Burk scored for Frickley to make the score 3-2. Vickers again put Denaby ahead. Burk made it 4-3 and Jones the Frickley centre half made it 4-4 from a penalty 10 minutes from time.

Strachan’s decider came with five minutes to go. Burk was the best forward, but the feature of the game was a splendid display of Denaby’s new halfback line. Attwell, Downing and Wheat.

The return match at South Elmsall on Boxing Day was cancelled owing to fog after 10 minutes when Denaby were leading 1-0.
