Denaby United 7 Rotherham United Reserves 0

Denaby United defeated Rotherham United Reserves 7-0 on a heavily waterlogged Tickill square, but Denaby were far from being seven goals the better side.

Three times Rotherham struck the woodwork and once Millership kicked off the Denaby line, but though Rotherham had long spells of attacking, their small side was not as brightly in their finishing nor as smart on the ball as Denaby.

The conditions gave both sides a gruelling time, but it was a joy to watch Killourhy’s stylish distribution of the ball, his long, low, well-placed, scheming forward past and Millership’s delightful generalship.

Denaby began in sparkling fashion. Lennon and Hurley put them two up within eight minutes, and 12 minutes later Wright, who dash has made such a difference to Denaby’s forward power, added a third. Urien saved a penalty shot taken by Jordan in grand fashion, and Denaby led 3-0 at half-time, but 10 minutes after the resumption Wright had completed his hat-trick to make the score 5-0. Rotherham fought back, but Wright and Carver added further goals. Drury was a lively Rotherham leader.
