William Humphries

The funeral of Mr. W. Humphries, the highly respected deputy of the Cadeby Colliery, and hero and victim of the great disaster, took place on Sunday afternoon at Mexborough Cemetery.

Deep sympathy was shown on all sides, and every respect was paid to a good workmate and comrade. A squad from the Denaby St. John Ambulance Division were in attendance under the superintendence of Captain H.S. Witty and Sergeant Major Power. The Nursing Division ( of which Mrs. Humphries is a member, and to whom she is indebted for their many kindnesses ) were represented by :-Mrs. Yates, Mrs. Ellsey, Mrs. Hilton, and Mrs. Cavanagh.

Members of the rescue party and ambulance brigade acted as bearers. The chief mourners were :Mrs. Humphries, Mr. S. Humphries, Cissie and Austin Humphries, Mrs Humphries, Mrs Laycock, Mr. and Mrs. H. Humphries, Mr. and Mrs. W. Humphries, Mr. and Mrs. P. Humphries, Mr. and Mrs. Tilson, Mr. and Mrs. S. Tilson, Mr. J. Tilson, Mr. and Mrs. W. Hammond, Mr. and Mrs. Hathaway, Willie and Tom Tilson, Miss Tilson, Miss Epplestone, Mr. and Mrs. G. Tilson, Mr. and Mrs. Sidebottom, Mr. and Mrs. Littlewood, Mr. and Mrs. A. Lawley, Mrs. Horsfall, Mrs. Wilkinson, Miss Best, and many other relatives and friends.

The coffin was of plain oak, and bore the inscription :-” William Humphries, Died July 9th 1912, aged 33 years.”

Mr. G.L. Robinson carried out the whole of the funeral arrangements.

Many wreaths and crosses were received, amongst which were seen those from :-
