Inquest at Clifton

An inquest was held on Wednesday at Clifton, by Mr. F. E. Nicholson on the body of Joseph Pearce, who met with his death from injuries received on Monday evening.

It seems that he was returning home from Conisbrough on horseback, and was met in the yard by his daughter about 10:30. It was his custom to alight from the horse with the help of a ladder which stood near the stable door.

However, the animal did not stop close to the ladder as usual, and the deceased spoke to the horse to move nearer when it made for the stable and brought his head violently into contact with the top of the door place, which caused him to fall to the ground.

On being picked up, deceased was discovered to be badly hurt, and Dr Hill’s, Conisbrough, was sent for, but the poor fellow succumbed to injuries the following night at 9 o’clock.

A verdict of accidental death was returned. The deceased was highly respected in the neighbourhood.
