Mexborough and Swinton Times, January 2.

Denaby United 1 Chesterfield Reserves 1

There was a fairly good attendance to witness this match at Denaby on New Year´s Day. Denaby were without Lawley, who has been transferred to Barnsley, and McNeill was also left out, Roper going centre, whilst two reserves, Westwood and Walton were on the left-wing, Hardy being on the injured list.

Denaby had to defend the colliery end, on losing the toss.

Play was scrappy, consequent on the hardness of the ground, and the bouncing ball, and as a result of much highkicking the visitors forced a corner. It was splendidly placed and culminated in Blair heading a good goal.

Time was fast slipping away, and the game and entered on this last minute when a brilliant run by the Denaby front rank left Roper in possession. The own centre, who had got away to the left, let fly at the goal, but the ball screwed away to the right and Lindley, with a rush banged it into the net, giving Silcock no earthly chance of saving.

And so was the match veritably pulled out of the fire, the enthusiasm of the onlookers showing a keen appreciation of a final sensation.

Team: Tayles; Dudhill and Sheldrake; Goodlad, Chadfield and Dowson; Lindley, Ryans, Roper, Westwood and Walton
