Assault by Trade Unionists – Heavy sentences

At the Doncaster Waste Riding Police Court on Saturday, Frank Holding, Henry Wilson and George Stacey, were charged with assaulting John Fawcett.

All the parties are glass bottle makers, and live at Conisbrough, but the complainant is a “black sheep,” and the defendant’s union men. The union men at Conisbrough are out on strike, and defendant has commenced working there.

On Saturday night the parties met at the Eagle and Child Inn, Conisbrough. Complainant seeing the defendant’s wanted to quarrel, got up to leave the house, when he was attacked by the three defendants in succession, and beaten about the head.

He ran away, but they followed him, and eventually he took shelter in a grocers shop.

The bench thought the case a very bad one, and as an example to others. They find the defendants £5 each, or in default two months imprisonment.

Defendant said they should not pay.
