Larceny at Conisborough

John Ward, Collier was charged with larceny at Conisborough in January 19.

David Staley, the complainant stated that the prisoner had been lodging with him previous to this affair. On 18 January, the prison pawned his own jacket and vest, and asked complainant to lend him one for that day.

He allowed him to take them for one day, but told him he could not have them again.

The next day he (complainant) went out of the house at 2:30 and came back about 5:30, leaving defendant in the house. His coat and vest were hanging on the back of the door.

When he came home at 530 he missed his coat and vest and the prisoner had disappeared. He valued them at 12 shillings.

Margaret Kelly said about 5 o’clock on 12 January the prisoner gave her a coat and waistcoat to pawn. She had to get six shillings on it if she could. He took them and pawned them in the name of Margaret Kelly and obtained six shillings for them, which she took to the prisoner.

William Payne, manager to Mr Ray, pawnbroker of New Conisborough, deposed as to receiving the things in pledge from Margaret Kelly.

PC Jarvis proved us to the apprehension of the defendant who admitted having taken and pawned the articles, but meant to have them redeemed on the Saturday.

One months imprisonment with hard labour.
