Good news was forthcoming at Conisbrough Urban Council meeting on Wednesday for tenants of the prefabricated housing estate at the Oval, Elm Green Lane, who had been without lighting since they moved into a new houses some weeks ago.

They have improved with oil lamps and the like, but Councillor RH Shepherd, chairman of the Housing Committee, stated on Wednesday, “We have been trying to get the electric light into the houses and a letter has been received today that the Yorkshire Electric Power Co Ltd, hope to commence installing electric services in the houses within the next week.”

Councillor Gee’s Cheshire explained that the Council had been far from satisfied with the steps made forgetting the light. At the committee meeting on Monday they had appointed representatives to meet the Ministry of Health in Leeds.

Councillor Shepherd reported that approval had been received from the Ministry of health for authority to invite tenders for the 54 permanent houses to be erected on the Conanby number one site, and the Housing Committee recommended that tenders be invited. Applications also to be made for permission to erect eight Airey type houses at Chilkat Road, Conisbrough, and six houses at Church Road, Denaby.

The Ministry of Town and Country Planning is also given approval to the Windhill Farm site, amounting to 22,166 acres, for housing purposes, and has advised that 2.5 acres should be reserved as a school site.

The Committee’s recommendation that the acquisition site be proceeded with was confirmed.
