Only to Employ 40 girls

Conisbrough’s new light industry, the hearth rug factory of Messrs Inman of lead, opened on Monday at the former British Restaurant and bakehouse in Wellgate, with a staff of 25 girls and two foremen. 15 more girls will start work on Monday.

Mr Inman, Bristol, told the “South Yorkshire Times” yesterday that, unfortunately, it would not be possible to employ more people in that particular building as the HM factory inspector had limited the number of people to be engaged there to 40.

17 machines were already in operation on the ground floor, and upstairs, on the light, airy first floor, more girls were engaged in making rugs by hand on frames. The girls were undergoing a period of trading and once they became proficient it is anticipated that the output of rugs, all of which in charming designs, are for Britain’s export trade, would be at least 300 a week.

Practically all the girls reside at Conisbrough or Denaby.

Mr Inman, a Canadian, added that his firm were also engaged in the toy industry in Leeds, the chief felt that the buildings could be obtained locally there were prospects that consideration might be given to transferring part of the business to this district.
