A Row About a Sixpence

Samuel Giles was summoned for assaulting Emma Davies on the 23rd ult, at Denbigh Main, at the Reresby Arms.

Complainant was drinking at the inn, and the defendant was acting as a waiter, and a quarrel took place between them as to whether she had paid sixpence.

Defendant struck twice on the eye and once on the cheek, knocking out part of a tooth. He now said that complainant through the beer and the jug at him.

The sixpence was found on the floor next morning. Several witnesses were called on each side, and the evidence was very contradictory.

This defendant was fined 40 shillings and costs, or one month’s imprisonment with hard labour, the Chairman saying it was cowardly and brutal to strike a woman in this way, and if it had not been for the provocation he had received this they would have sent him to prison without the option of a fine.
