Savage Assault at Denaby

at Doncaster on Saturday, John McGann, collier, Conisborough was summoned for assaulting George Fretwell, collier, Denaby on the 17th inst.

the parties were in the Denaby Main Hotel, and were discussing the Pit Lads strike when defendant said something to complainant, and the latter getting up to go out, he struck him in the face, and knocked him in the ribs several times. He was badly injured and the doctor had to be sent for.

Defendant admitted striking complaining, but that denied the kicking. The magistrates imposed a fine of 40 shillings and said that if it had not been for defendant’s first offence good been sent to prison
