Staff Shortage at Balby Street School

March 1963

South Yorkshire Times, March 23.

A Staff Shortage at Denaby.

Conisbrough Primary School Managers were told last night of the grave situation of staffing at Denaby Balby Street Infants school.

Mrs J Moody, headmistress, said that her staff numbered two temporary systems, one of whom was leaving and three “unqualified people.”

“We are better off at present there. We have been,” added Mrs Moody, whose school has 136 pupils.

Mr S.Walker, Deputy Divisional Education Officer said that there was not much they could do about it except to keep the temporary members of staff at the school.

Mr Walker was asked if staff could be directed to the school, and he replied that most supply teachers had gone to the secondary schools.

Mr Walker said that they had advertised for several weeks for qualified teachers, and they obtain one qualified teacher, and six married women, were returning to the profession.

Cllr A.E.Tyas said that it was too unfair to the 136 children and something ought to be done.

“I think it is necessary for us to take some action,” said County Cllr J.Prendergast, Chairman of the Governors.

The governors are to write to the authority to explain the staffing situation.

I think Mrs Moody was called Miss Beecham when I started at Balby Street. Mr Moody was a teacher at Conisbrough Northclffe
