Stealing apples from an Orchard at Conisborough.


Joseph Taylor, pony driver, Denaby, was charged with stealing apples.

George Crooks deposed that he was a farm labourer in the employ of Mr Horsefield. At 7.30 on the previous Monday morning he was going in the direction of his home when he saw five boys in an orchard. He went into the orchard after the lads. Four of the boys ran away, taking with them a quantity of pears. He caught defendant, who had four pears in his possession.

Police Sgt Morley deposed that when he charged the lad he said, if the other boys had not beenenticing him he should not have gone into the orchard.

The orchard belonging to a Mr Hudson. He had complained several times about depredations committed there by lads and wished it putting a stop to.

The superintendent said Mr Hudson had spoken to him on the matter; he said he did not wish to press the case, only that it should prove a warning to others.

Fined 2s 6d and 12s 6d costs and to pay for the damage assessed at 4d.
