Threatening a Woman at Denaby

John Phillips, miner, Denaby, was summoned for threatening Louisa Worthington, on September 25.

Complainant stated that someone came to her door on the day in question, and said a neighbour wanted to see. She went to the defendant’s door and said, “If your mother in?”

The defendant on hearing this, rose his hand, and said he would “split her – – – – face.” He then followed her into her own house, and said if her husband, too, did not come out, he would “split his – – – – face.”

Witness said, “I don’t want to fight; what is the matter with you?”

The defendant’s family bore a bad name, and she was afraid that defendant would do her some harm.

A neighbour living in the same yard was then called, but their evidence did not bear on the case.

The complainant then called police Constable Kendall, who stated that he could not say anything in this case, as he was away at Swinton at the time locking a prisoner up. (Laughter.)

Defendant stated that complainants witness never was present, he only told complainants to keep out of his house

Defendant was bound over in his own recognisance of £5 to keep the peace.
