Workmen’s Supper.
The workmen employed at Ashfield Fire and Clay Works were invited to supper on Friday last by Messrs. Walker and Crawshaw.
Upwards of 90 sat down to a splendid repast, which was provided in a large marquee in the Priory grounds. After full justice had been done to the good things placed before them the tables were cleared and a most enjoyable evening was spent.
Mr. Godfrey Walker occupied the chair, and the vicar the vice chair. The chairman proposed the health of the Queen, which was duly acknowledged. The health of Messrs Walker and Crawshaw what proposed by Mr. W. Cusworth, and drunk with musical honours. Mr. Walker thanked them kindly for the manner they had drunk to the health of himself and partner, and spoke of the good feeling that had always existed between them and their workmen. Mr. Crawshaw also thanked the workmen, and hoped the good feeling between them would continue.
Mr. Walker proposed the Visitors, to which the vicar, Mr. Earnshaw, and Councillor Jones responded. A hearty vote of thanks was recorded to Mrs. Crooks (housekeeper to Mr. Walker) for the splendid repast placed before them.
Songs were sung by Capt Crawshaw, Messrs. Downing, Hill, Lewis, Lawton, Neville, Woodhouse, Ridgill and others, an enjoyable evening terminating with “Auld Lang Syne”
