A Violent Denaby Miner
Joseph Shephard, alias Ball, employed at the Denaby Main Colliery, and living in Denaby, spent his Whitsuntide holiday in Dawley near Wellington, in Shropshire and with two men, named William Bray and Richard Woodbine, committed a violent assault upon William Crumpton.
Bray and Woodbine were afterwards apprehended on the charge, and remanded for a week, as the prosecutor was unable to appear.
On Thursday, superintendent Hammond, of Rotherham, received instruction from superintendent Timms of Dawley, to arrest Shephard on the same charge, adding that Crumpton was not expected to recover; and Shephard was arrested at his work on the same night by policeman Kendall, and lodged in the cells in Rotherham
On Saturday he was taken to Dawley, and there remanded until the ordinary petty sessions day.
