Transport memories

The bus strikes on recent Saturdays have caused much inconvenience but there was a time when there was no regular service between Denaby and Mexborough.

When the horse-drawn buses plied between Denaby Main and Mexborough it was one of the joys of the children at the week-end to see the buses running and a great thrill if they had a ride in one, especially to sit on the front seat with the driver.

Our Denaby correspondent writes:

“This brings to my mind the names of the people who ran this service only at the week-ends and then only from Denaby to Mexborough. In the week, if you wanted anything from Mexborough, you had to walk, and always it was a walk to Conisbrough, for no vehicles plied in that direction.

Many of our older readers will remember the names of the families who had the wagonettes or buses drawn by horses, such as Stephen Baines and his son, Stephen, Mr. Dunning and his sons, Mr. Goodwin and his sons, Mr. Harry Cockayne, and old Elijah Snare who lived in Mexborough. Those were the days when a ride in a horse-drawn bus was a thrill.”
